Directory Post last updated February 6th, 2023.

Originally, this started out as a short post about my go-to online brands when shopping for rave and festival outfits…after doing some research and discovery, I quickly realized I was going down a fashion rabbit hole! Now it is a rockstar librarian style catalogue of all the dope brands I come across.

I belong to multiple festival and rave Facebook groups. One of the most common questions I see asked time and again is where to get alternative fashion online.  After a while of replying to posts with the same list of brands over and over, I decide to start making a structured directory. I went back and read through hundreds of comment threads and wrote down the brands that other people were frequently recommending. After collecting brand names I had seen constantly, I then did some independent research, which led me to discover a whole other world of fashion suppliers.

Fast forward three weeks of me scouring the internet, and I had managed to compile a detailed list of over 100 awesome fashion brands where you can find the hottest garments and accessories. The thought behind creating this list was selfishly to make my life easier the next time someone asked me, “What are good places to shop for crazy fun clothes online?” I could just send them a link with all this info like a pro. Long story short, I wrote this post in an effort to serve as a directory for various brands I have discovered over the years. Style & genre inclusive: Goth, Kawaii, Neon Western Wear and so, so many more!

The list is long and ever groing, so in an attempt at being unbiased, I will list brands in alphabetical order. Some brands are fast fashion, others are small businesses. That is why the links will vary in destination. Most will lead you to the brand website, a few others will direct you to Instagram or Etsy. Fun fact, I am an ambassador for some of these companies and I included my promo codes and discount links where ever you see #affiliate.

I plan to add to this list as new brands pop on my radar. Have a brand that you love or own a business that features alternative fashion and/or festival rave wear? Reach out to me to have it featured in this directory!

Must Have Items For Summer FUN

Whether you’re trying to have your Hawt Girl Summer, or just live your best life in the sunshine, there are a few items that you need to round it all out. I Have listed my top 16 things everyone should have to maximize their fun in the sun and get the most out of the outdoors this summer!

Fun fact about me, I try to hide form the sun. I basically treat myself like a Vampire. Big hats, rash guards, long sleeve tunic dresses, and personal shade are my BFF’s. I often get warm quickly and the direct sunlight will zap my energy and leave me sun drunk. I also hold tan lines for a long time and the contrast drives me bonkers, so I just opt out of it all together!

This blog post contains Amazon Affiliate links. Meaning if you purchase something from one of my recommended links I may receive some compensation at no extra cost to you. To read more about what it means to be an affiliate, please click here.

1. Caftans. This traditional middle eastern garment is a great addition to the summer pool wardrobe. It is usually more full coverage and shapeless, but flattering at the same time. Caftans are a great cover up regardless of if you are poolside or lounging at home. The are comfortable and lightweight, the perfect compliment to a fabulous summer.

2. Cotton dress with pockets. Cotton is the ultimate summer fabric. Lightweight, breathable and easy to throw in the washer so you can have it ready to wear many times over. Enjoy wearing it at home as lounge wear or pair it with some cute shoes and fun hat, you are an instant summer sensation…with pockets!

3. Functional pool float. Not all swim floats are created equally. While some might look fun, they are not functional. I have found that the best style of inflatable float is the semi-submerged lounge chair with dual cupholders and handles. Great for linking up and keeping track of your items/drink.

4. Sunscreen. Don’t let the sun harsh your fun. These fun colored options make putting onsun block a work of art and a way to express yourself!

5. Bug spray bracelets. I personally fell like these help me keep those pesky skeeters away. And I tent to use two on my ankles and am good for the day usually.

6. Telephone chord hair ties. These are great to add some volume to a regular top knot. I also like that they have a great non slip grip, but do not pull and cause far less damage to your hair then the average elastic hair tie.

7. Waterproof stay put sandals. There are so many brands to consider, from the generic water shoe to a customized pair of Crocks. One of my favorite brands is KEEN. They are super durable, waterproof, and designed to give you arch support and over all comfort in an out of the water.

8. Hair/beard oil. Chlorine pools, salt water and the sunlight can all have a pretty harsh impact on your hair. Protect it from damage and enhance that natural shine with Caster Oil. I like to make my own mixture with hints of essential oil to give it a nice fragrance.

9. Pop-up net coverings for food. Summer tends to mean firing up the grill and having a BBQ. Cooking outdoors can attracted unwanted insects and put a damper on dining. Help keep the pests away with these lightweight netted coverings, that are easy to pack and store. No more swatting flies aways from salads and sides.

10. Corn on the cob holders. A bounty of fresh produce is one of the many perks of summertime. a popular saying I grew up hearing was “The corn should be knee high by the 4th of July”. Eating sweet corn at cookouts always makes me nostalgic. Just ‘cuz you’re having a hot girl summer doesn’t mean you should burn your fingers. Why not make the whole experience outright extra by adding some novelty corn on the cob holders. Classy throwback fun vibes.

11. Half umbrella shade area. Perfect for a multitude of summer events: kids sporting events, the swimming pool, local park, or a movie night in the back yard. I leave this in the trunk of my car “just in case” and it provides plenty of space for at least 4 adults. It is versatile and great to use for rain or shine!

12. Hydration backpack. There are endless brands that offer this water bottle/backpack hybrid. I have owned various ones over the years, some of my favorite brands for functionality and style were CamelBak and Vibedration. If you are looking to invest in one, I suggest going for at least a 2L bladder, and give yourself a few pockets/compartments for storage. Bonus for adjustable straps and D rings to hang items from. For longevity of the silicon bladder, make sure you wash and store it properly.

13. Cooling towels. These bad boys have saved me countless times. The temperatures tend to rise in the summer months along with the time spent doing outdoor activities. Cooling towels work instantly to lower your body temp and prevent overheating. Wet the towel, rap up a few ice cubes and place it around your neck. The material retains the water, but keeps it cool against your skin for a few hours. You can even tie it around your head and wear it as a hair accessory so you not only feel cool, you look cool too!

14. Water drinking bottle with mister. Who doesn’t love a good mash-up? This Frankenstein style invention is the best of both worlds. Prevent dehydration while keeping yourself cool with a burst of misted water every now-and-then. Complete with lock feature so you don’t accidently squirt yourself…Genius!

15. Waterproof lanyard bag for your phone. Swimming at the pool/beach, canoe trips, rafting adventures, water parks, boating adventures, thunderstorms. All very big traditions for summer fun. Don’t let water dampen your fun by ruining your cell phone. Make sure your mobile is protected so you can still snap pictures, record videos and make phone calls. Not only are these cases waterproof, they float and have a lanyard strap so you can hang it around your neck for easy access. Got to love that touch screen technology.

16. Rashguard swimwear. This style originally worn only by surfers and divers and has been a summer fashion trend for a few years now. These are typically made of 4 way stretch fabrics that block out a certain amount of UV rays to protect your skin. Rashguards are great for when you are spending long amounts of time in the water and don’t want to worry about constantly applying sunscreen, or are in a natural area that doesn’t allow the use of sunscreens, a rashguard is the perfect solution. I suggest ones that have a full zip front to get on and off easily, wet or dry.

Everything You Need To Know About Crowd Surfing

Curious About Crowd Surfing, Let Me School You!

With another year of large gathering/events being postponed, there is no excuse not to be prepared when things open back up after quarantine. Going to a rave or festival for the first time is on a lot of folks Bucket Lists. I want to help you level up your crowd game for when events open back up, because you know that after two years of having to hold it all in, people are going to go HARD once festivals are a thing again. You have never really fully embraced a large crowd until you have rode it like a wave!

Crowd Surfing Visual

One of the most fun experiences of attending music concerts and some festivals is Crowd Surfing. Also commonly referred to as Body Surfing the crowd, it means you are transported from one point to another simply by people passing you over their heads, distributing your body weight among their many hands. Crowd surfing has been around for almost 50 years in the communities of any edgy genre you can think of — rock, punk, metal, ska, etc., but now it extends to many EDM shows as well.

What To Expect

Taller folks, you most definitely get an arm work out for the night. Shorter people, you make instant friends with all the tall folks around you, but you also get hit in the head with more than a few elbows and feet. Everyone should have their hands up, regardless of height, because you never know when you’ll have to help carry the weight of a surfing body. That is what it is like to be on the ground while someone is crowd surfing in the sea of hands above you. I have MANY friends that refuse to “go-up” for various reasons. For those of you who are still interested, keep reading! Crowd surfing to me is like flying. It is a feeling of weightlessness and of being oh-so magical and free.

*PRO TIPS* for those considering the Crowd Surfing experience. 1) Have a post-surf plan 2) Secure all the things and 3) Communicate with the people behind the hands.

While you are hopefully practicing the buddy system you turn to your friend and you hash out a quick plan. For example, a certain song comes on and that is when you’re wanting to “go-up”, then where to meet after you “drop”.  Figure out how to best secure your loose items. Zipper pockets are your friend. Everything you can not secure/don’t want to risk loosing needs to be left with your buddy or stashed in pile somewhere. What shoes are you wearing? If you can tie the laces tightly and your shoes will not slip off easily, wear them. If not, leave them with your buddy!

Next, have a planned meeting spot for either after that set ends, top of the hour, etc.  Whatever suits you best.  And just as you have been communicating with your buddy, say positive things as you are passed to the front of the crowd.  A “Thank you! You guys rock!” goes a long way.  Also, try to keep your core tight/stiffen your body a bit. It makes passing you much easier to those on the ground. Try not to be a limp noodle. I tend to cross my legs together at the ankles and then have my arms out. By making myself easier to pass it ensures I am less likely to get hurt during the surf session as well. Lastly, pick your moment and yell with your little rock and roll heart “PUT ME UP!” and you are off baby!

Things To Keep In Mind

A few things to consider that you might not have thought of concerning crowd surfing. If you are wearing a skirt or a dress, it’s going to end up letting your goodies all hang out. Usually on accident, sometimes because people are perverted. Either way, I advise AGAINST crowd surfing in easy access clothing. Take the hoodie off your waist and wear it. I have also seen bathing suits, tank tops, even t-shirts get torn off a person as they pass over the hands. The little straps and loose fabric gets caught on things, and again, people can be jerks.

Another thing to keep in mind is, if you go over the wall/fence between the fans and the stage, you are pretty much done. Often, but not always, you will have to go alllllllllll the way out and around to even start to get back to where your friends are huddled together just a few 100ft from stage. Remember, over the wall = backstage of sorts. Sometimes, security is cool, band members start partying with you. Other times, you are escorted quickly to a side exit and shown the door. Keep in mind you might have to get your bearings on where you are in less then 10 seconds after being literally handed over horizontally!

Steve Aoki Crowd Surfing at his concert.

This activity is not without consequences. Beyond the torn/lost clothing and personal items, you can actually get hurt doing this. There are numerous stories at EVERY EVENT of folks suffering broken bones and cuts that require stitches after Crowd Surfing. Please proceed at your own risk and use your best judgment to gauge the crowd and the possibility of risk. I have shared all my personal tips for harm reduction, the rest is up to you to make that informed decision. Go with grace!

Important Phrases for *Crowd Surfing*

  • PUT ME UP: This gets the crowd surfing experience started by letting those around you know that you want to be put up into the sea of hands.
  • DROP ME: Lets the hands know that you want to be put down, and end your surf.
  • OVER THE WALL: You want to be thrown over the divider between the crowd and the stage. *I always opt to drop a few rows from the front for premium viewing placement.

  1. Baking is all about timing. From the actual cook time, to any rest requirements for an item, minutes matter! A few minutes under and your product is still raw, if you leave them in the oven a little too long, they can taste burnt. Timing gets more complicated the more ingredients you have. Do yourself a favor and mise en place everything you need before you start actually combining them. This ensures you will have prepped everything you need, and allows you to streamline the baking process when you are actively combing ingredients for a recipe.

2. Sifting can make a difference. If you are using Powdered Sugar or Cocoa Powder, definitely sift. I like to sift all my dry ingredients together in general to make sure there are no clumps and that everything is evenly distributed. My preferred method for sifting is to use a wire strainer and a rubber spatula.

3. Measure everything correctly. Did you know there is a difference between liquid measure, and dry measure? Dry measures are typically opaque and come in a set with different predetermined amounts that stack into each other, where liquid measures are see-through containers that have a tiny pour spout on the lip and have markings on the sides to indicate how much is being used. When using dry measurements it is imperative that you level measure the cups. This means taking something, like the back of a butter knife, and dragging it across the top to remove any access product that is domed over to insure you are accurately measuring the proper amount. Fun fact, brown sugar needs to be “packed” while flour should not be! When in doubt, weigh your ingredients with a kitchen/gram scale. This is how the majority of professional recipes will list measurements for ingredients because it has less room for error.

4. How to easily scale recipe yields. Want to makes cookies but the recipe you have is for 10 dozen?! You can reduce any recipe down to the lowest egg. Ex, 4 eggs, you can reduce everything by 3/4 to scale down a recipe. Again, remember that a large egg = 2oz, 1:1 yolk to white. This allows you to do the math if a recipe only calls for one part of the egg, or measures in weight.

5. Trust the toothpick method for testing doneness. Nothing worse then spending all that time preparing your baked good to have it be still raw in the middle after baking. For those who have never heard of the toothpick test, it is the simple process of taking a toothpick and poking it into the center of an item, and seeing if it comes out clean (done) or if there is still raw batter below the surface (needs more cook time).

6. There is something called “carry over baking”. Which is the process of the baked item continuing to cook once removed from the oven, but still in the pan/dish. Take this into account if your item is more on the well done side as you should try to remove/cool asap once out of the heat source.

7. There are some staple ingredients that you should always keep on hand. Having these items already in your pantry will allow you to bake most things on the fly, without a trip to the store. With the exception of the last item (eggs) all the food stuffs on this list have a long shelf life, making them perfect to stock up on when they are on sale.

8. TASTE, TASTE, TASTE! Taste everything before you bake it in the oven. You can make adjustments to raw product, or know if something is off before it is cooked by simply tasting. Whenever you are working with a flavor especially, it is important to remember You can always add more. Taste each bit of your raw mixture as you add flavor. It can quickly go from not enough to too much.

9. The freezer is your friend. Freezing items after they have been baked is a great way to lock in their freshness and elevate the flavor. Renowned Chef Thomas Keller swears by freezing his Parisian macarons for 24hours – 2 weeks. I recommend chilling cookie dough batter for a few minutes before portioning and baking off to firm up the butter and allow for better finished product. I use the freezer the most when I am doing cake decorating. Once the cake comes out of the oven, let it cool to room temperature before placing it in the freezer. In addition to locking in flavor, putting cakes in the freezer allows them to firm up so they are easier to cut and cover in icing.

10. Read the recipe. This sounds like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised how easy it is to forget an ingredient or accidentally skip a step. Cooking and baking is really just about how well you can follow instructions and accurately execute a dish as it was intended. Pay special attention when a recipe calls for items to be at room temperature or cold, they mention that for a reason. This is legit science people! One thing I do, especially if I am working with a new recipe, is I write it out. That way I can check off things as I go, and it allows me to make notes/adjustments as needed. Once I am finish, and I deem it a worthy recipe, I add it to my repertoire.

11. Butter consistencies matter! Adding melted butter from the microwave is usually a sure fire way to ensure your baked goods are not fluffy and flakey. Unless your recipe calls for melted or chilled butter, it usually wants it at room temperature. With chilled butter, usually the colder, the better. The purpose is so it doesn’t melt when being mixed in with the other ingredients. For example, when making a pie crust or biscuits, I like to cut my butter into small cubes then freeze it. When working with melted butter, it should not be hot, but liquid and lukewarm. Hot butter can start cooking your eggs in your batter, and that is no bueno. Butter is far easier to mix in and get the correct consistency when it is prepped ahead of time. I also leave out a couple sticks of butter and let them get to room temp the day before so it is easier to work with when a recipe just calls for regular butter.

12. Keep track of recipes that you like. Keep a notebook or a binder for a hard copy version, then snap a picture and have a digital version as well. The pictures allow you to have access to your recipes while on the go and also the ability to share them easily with friends and family.

13. Oven temperatures matter. Get a hanging oven thermometer to ensure your cooking temperatures are accurate. Also, make sure that you keep the oven door closed as much as possible while in use to keep the heat in. Maintaining heat in the oven is one of the most important things during the cooking process. Baked goods can get messed up many different ways in the oven, and it is a shame to ruin your efforts in the final stretch.

14. Line your baking sheets. Putting down some parchment paper, or a silicon mat, makes for easy release and even easier clean up. While used mostly when baking cookies, I also use parchment to line the bottom of my cake and brownie pans before I pour the batter in. *PRO TOP* There is something called the *Spray, paper, spray* method. This means spraying your pan, then putting down parchment, then adding anther layer of easy release spray. I do this EVERY time I bake a cake. This allows for them to easily come away from the pan and almost always prevents ripping or tearing of the finished product.

Reynolds Parchment Paper 12″ Wide 60pcs

15. Coat heavy mix-in items with flour before adding. With heavy ingredients, like chocolate chips, fruit, nuts, etc. it is best to lightly coat them in flour/flour equivalent. It helps to prevent them from sinking to the bottom of your batter, and allows them to be more evenly distributed in the batter.

The Art of Self Care

What is self care?  That is a broad question, but I tend to think it encompasses listening to your inner voice to recognize your own needs and then, in-turn, processing those emotions constructively.  Something that requires constant maintenance.  An ever fluid situation that is often influenced by the things happening around us.  We all know how loco 2020 was, but loving yourself is never out of date!  If you find quarantine has taken a toll on your sanity and your patience, YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

Getty Images

It has almost been a year…everyone has had a quarantine birthday, it all sucks.  Some have run the gambit on emotions.  But the one thing I think is, that anyone with a sense of personal awareness, has realized things about themselves.  What they like, and don’t like.  What they have the power to control, and how they deal with stress, boredom, and loneliness.  There’s a number of frustrations in the world at this moment, and it can get overwhelming.  It’s important to take care of ourselves, not just physically, but mentally too.

Sometimes my mind goes to a dark place.  I think that is common for a lot of folks.  The trick is not letting yourself get stuck in that mindset.  It’s challenging to break routines, and having reoccurring negative thoughts is a form of routine.  How does one change they way they think?  Here are some of the ways I like to disrupt my own thinking patterns and snap myself out of a funk…

1. SUDOKUS. Your brain needs a workout too.  These are far ess frustrating then a crossword puzzle and are a fun way to keep your thinking skills sharp.

Sudoku Puzzle Book

2. TAKE WALKS. It’s truly amazing what just a little change in scenary will do.  Walking allows you to take in a lot more visual ques that stimulate different areas of the brain.  Not only is it a beautiful distraction, but walking in nature is great for all your senses, sort of flooding your receptors with information… subconsciously redirecting your thoughts. You can always add your headphones to the mix an listen to some of my favorite songs, but it’s often nice to hear the sounds of wildlife to really make you feel alive.

3. COOKING.  No matter your skill level, thanks to the internet, pretty much as long as you can follow instructions, you can put together a fabulous meal.  Cooking is a great way to engage your brain because there is typically a lot of multitasking & planning involved.  From researching a recipe, sourcing ingredients, to chopping/measuring and then actively cooking. Cooking also offers the ability to include others in the process, from children to a group of friends/family. The great part about cooking and mental health for me is the process forces me to focus on the task at hand, rather then any other randlom thoughts.  Then once I’m finished making something, I feel a sense of accomplishment usually immediately followed by satisfaction.  Like, legit, I made this awesome tasty thing, oh hell yeah!

4. CALL PEOPLE.  This might sound like a gimme, but it’s something we all take for granted. Reach out to that childhood friend, bestie from High School or a favorite old co-worker.  These calls are great as they bring nostalgia, but also a sort of talk therapy that happens when you let the conversation free flow.

Getty Images

5. DRINK WATER. It really is one of the fastest, most natural energy boosts. Often times we don’t even realize we are under hydrated until it is too late. Make sure your body is getting enough of the basics, we are made up of 60% water, so that’s pretty important. I know I always feel a sense of accomplishment after a chug a 16oz glass. Want a cheep rush? try it!

Getty Images

6. VITAMIN B.  Don’t for get to take your Vitamins! B is a great place to start, and feel free to add others, but if you only do one, vitamin B complex should be it. Great for a natural energy boost and helps with hangovers!  Heads up, if you have never taken these before they will turn your pee bright yellow, but that’s normal.  These have been a staple in my daily regimen for the last 7 years.

Vitamine B Complex

7. BREAK STUFF.  *Got an old pillow? Rip it to shreds.  Just don’t let your dog see you do it. *Random old, broken appliance tucked away in the garage or the basement?  Go full Office Space on that bitch.  Have the home demolition project that you have not tackled yet? Now is the time to throw that sledge hammer around. Another idea, visit a thrift shop/ secondhand store, buy some china, flatware, plates, ect…put on some tunes, start dancing and throw plates on the ground.  The Greeks do it, OPA! Bonus points if you throw on a little Limp Bizkit while you do it!

Getty Images

8. DIY SPA DAY.  I’m a big advocate of these. Run the gauntlet of all the pampering or pick one task and lean into it.  Face masks, bath bombs, scented candles, paint your nails, cucumber slices on your eyes, soak in a hot bath, conditioning treatment for your hair, coconut oil moisturizer treatment for your skin…just to name a few!

Getty Images

9.  MAKE A PLAYLIST. Again, on of my favorite things…but this time, the focus is on the act of creating based on feelings.  It’s a sort of music therapy combined with nostalgia.  Listening to the different songs takes you down memory lane and once you build the playlist, it’s one more tool in your arsenal against *those days* as music has been scientifically proven to have an impact on our moods.  I have playlists for all the occasions…crying, angry, relaxing, uplifting. While I don’t listen to them all that often, I constantly add to them.

Getty Images

10. SELF IMPROVEMENT.  At the end of the day, the only thing we can control is ourselves.  Internal reflection is healthy, but can be tricky waters to navigate.  One of my favorites books, called “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz has been the single most impactful guide I have come across so far, which is why I revisit it every so often to keep it fresh in my mind. A short read, even faster listen, this work focuses on the individual, and how we ourselves influence our worlds.

***Trigger Warning***

TO DO

Host a Palentine’s Event. People, show those non-romantic partners in your life some love! Plan a group zoom call, even gather socially distanced in the garage, backyard, rooftop, etc. Or pick up the phone and reach out individually to those boss babes and down ass dudes that make your life that much more awesome because they are in it. Love doesn’t have to be only romantic folks, plutonic love between friends and family can be some of the strongest bonds in life!

Drive-in Experience. From Movies to Raves, it’s all going down at the drive-in these last few months! Most areas that have a drive-in theater have utilized them as a great way to safely host events during COVID. Do a quick Google search to see what is available in your surrounding area. Perhaps there is something going down on the 14th, or maybe you just gift tickets to an upcoming show.

DIY Spa Day. Life is crazy right now, everyone deserves a day of relaxation! Give yourself a mani/pedi, get some face sheet masks, have some bath bombs or shower soothers, rub yourself (or one-another) down with lotion/oil/massage melt bars. Want to get extra freaky? Try a hot soy candle. It burns at a lower temperature than regular candle wax and also provides a moisturizing element idea for all over the body.

For those not into critters, the zoo offers a $5 herbivore option that consists of romaine lettuce, cabbage, and other leafy greens that can be fed to vegetarian animals. The best part of the deal? Play with Animals. Go to an animal shelter and see about volunteering, or just to play with the kitties and puppies. Animals need love too! Plus, who knows, maybe you will connect with one of the animals and decide it is time to add a fur baby to your life. Animals are great because they provide us with the unconditional love that we all deserve!

Music. Go old school & make a mixed tape! Or update that to a burned CD or custom playlist! Spotify now offers real-time music sharing (beta) with friends.  Share songs in real-time, make your own song line ups, and have the ability to actively change the tracks as you see fit to match the mood.  Very cool feature and a great way to be interactive and present with friends and lovers.

Alcohol. Seems like most people have upped their drinking game since quarantine. If you are looking for something to gift the lover of libations, try a nice bottle of wine, special aged spirit, or even a craft beer sample pack. Add some fancy/custom drinking glasses, invest in a fun ice tray to make some heart-shaped ice cubes, or get condoms for your wine bottles…practice safe sips!

Bacon Roses. Perfect for anyone on a Keto diet, or anyone who loves bacon! This easy DIY is a showstopper. Also great idea for Father’s Day! Simply roll up two slices of thick bacon, secure together by inserting a toothpick all the way through the lower half. Place in muffin tins and bake-off at 350 for approximately 12-15 minutes. Want to make them legit? Buy silk flowers from the dollar store and pop off the tops because you only need the stems. Insert the cooked bacon “rose” where the silk flower used to be, then for a finishing touch, bundle in wax paper then wrap with crate paper or cellophane for decoration.

NOT Chocolate. Believe it or not, there are people in this world who do not like chocolate. I know, sounds made up…annnnd dibs!  That being said, here are two of my favorite convenient treat ideas for your sweet: Conversation hearts.  I know, so cliche, but seriously, it’s like snow on Christmas…it just isn’t the same without it!  Plus, you can get sexy adult versions now, and who doesn’t love X-rated candy?! Also, on that same note, have you ever tried edible underwear? Chocolate. I had to include a few chocolate options just in case there is someone out there who is just burnt out on the same old run of the mill candy boxes but doesn’t want to give up on chocolate completely…don’t worry, I’ve got you. Make your own custom candy bars!  If you want to go full Chocolatier, you can make up your own flavor profiles and confection combinations. If that sounds a bit much, making a customized wrapper is another way to go. Looking for something different, but still a crowd-pleaser? Check out chocolate-covered potato chips! My personal favorite is the Mike Sells & Ester Price brand. And if it’s salty-sweet you’re looking for, we can take that a step farther to include chocolate-covered bacon.

FORIA Personal Lubricant. Available in two types, FORIA Pleasure which contains THC (only available in CA & CO), and FORIA Wellness which contains CBD. Cannabis. Invest in some good old fashion Mary Jane!  A lot of states now have either a medical allowance or are fully recreationally legal. Try a pre-roll, pop a gummy, or enjoy an infused beverage.  Already a regular user? Get yourself/partner a new accessory!  Rolling trays, fun novelty pipe, flavored rolling papers, or even go all out and clean their current piece to look good as new!  Stock up on pipe cleaners, 420 cleaner & some gloves because your hands will get resin on them if you’re doing it right.  *PRO TIP: You can easily make your own homemade 420 cleaning solution by simply combining vodka and coarse salt together.

SEXY TIME

Book Time with a Sexpert. Not just any advice, but award-winning advice from *XBIZ Sexpert of the Year*!!! Boudoir Photography Shoot. Boudoir photos are all about capturing intimate, sensual, and sometimes erotic images. This type of photography is great for building self-esteem! Now even men are getting in on the trend with “Dudeoir” sessions of their own. You can hire a photographer that specializes in this romantic style, and they will know how to pose you complimentary to your body type. If you find yourself a bit timid about doing this in front of a stranger, you can DIY this! Set up a tripod (bonus if there is a remote) with a full-length mirror behind it so you can see yourself. Make sure you have good lighting, a ring light is very helpful! Then, use the timed delay feature on your cell phone camera to give yourself 10 seconds to pose. Great things about this, you can take all the pictures you like, and only keep the ones you like best. Gives you total control over the process. But once you see how dang hawt you look, you’re going to want to make it your next Christmas card!

Vibrators. My personal favorite, that I have recommend to many-a-person, is the HITACHI MAGIC WAND.  This will pay for itself 100x over…you can thank me later!  Do not be intimidated or turned off by the fact this toy plugs into the wall, look at it as you’re getting more power than a battery can provide and you’ll never have to “borrow” batteries out of the remote ever again! There is no excuse to not get some this Valentine’s day as you can provide yourself with endless amounts of TLC when you practice self-love.  The great thing about masturbation?  It is the power of knowing your own body and the ability to control your own orgasm.  The great thing about a vibrator?  You don’t have to do all the hard work!  Great for all genders, vibes take things to the next level.  Literally, now there’s voltage involved.

Flavored Lube. The perfect way to surprise your partner and a nice incentive to spend some face time below the belt.  Take intimacy to the next level with a tasty alternative to regular lube.  Available in a variety of flavors and base lubricants to suit what fits your needs best.  My personal favorite is water-based Sliquid, in cherry-vanilla.  If you want to search for various taste options, please make sure to avoid lubes with sugar as they can cause irritation and infections, especially for vaginas.

In closing, I hope you all got the bigger message of this post…that love doesn’t have to be only romantic, in fact, some of the best loves are not. They are plutonic. The love of self, love of family, love of friends, love of country…the unconditional loves we are all worthy of!

Don’t skip out on the love celebration just because you are not partnered up!  Sometimes the 14th of February is referred to as *single awareness day* and I think that’s BS.  This day should be a reminder to all that LOVE WINS.  Love yourself, love nature, love animals, love each other!

Still thinking Valentine’s Day is not your thing? SKIP IT and celebrate Mardi Gras!  Just remember, in the words of the Queen of Drag, RuPaul herself, “How you gonna’ love somebody else if you can’t love yourself?!”

With the New Year full of promise, and folks adapting to the “new normal”, everyone is going out into the wilderness for some fresh air and sunshine. Camping and outdoor adventures are now more popular than ever. I have done my fair share of camping over the years, from canvas tents in Girl Scouts to yurts at Burning Man, and I have definitely learned how to camp smarter, not harder over the years.

This post is designed to level up your nature experience. Activity ideas, pimp campsite decor, food/prep tips, and game-changing products & gear, I’m going to cover all of it! ACTIVITIES

Some of my favorite memories are from camping events. There really are endless ways to entertain yourself when you are out in nature, but here are a few extra ideas that might spark inspiration…

  • Birdwatching.  Fun fact, there are roughly 10,000 bird species in the world today. Over 2,000 can be found in North America! Birding is a great way to connect with nature with your eyes and your ears. The really cool thing, you only have to go as far as your backyard to discover some avian beauties. Grab a bird guide book or check out the National Audubon Society for some online resources.

  • Climb a tree.  Embrace your inner child, maybe scuff a knee and get some sap on your hands.  Either way, it is a very nostalgic way to enjoy nature.  Climbing trees also gives you a higher vantage point to get a broader view of your surroundings, and who doesn’t love a fresh perspective?!
  • Spelunking aka Caving. The National Speleological Society has a great introduction to caving that includes videos and lots of tips. Plus, fun fact about caves, they are naturally temperature-controlled year-round, so great no matter the season.

  • Fire. Take that bonfire to the next level by tossing on a few Magic Fire Color Changing Packs to see a rainbow of flames. The blue, green, and pink colors especially are a real eye-catching surprise as you watch the flames dance. Fun for all ages, and a fast way to upgrade your campsite.
  • Fire 2.0. Feeling extra adventurous?  Give Fire Spinning a try!  Dancing with fire satisfies your soul on a very primal level.  Want to know more, watch this short clip about Fire Dancing Safety. While the video is directed to the Burning Man audience, it is extremely applicable to the average camper wanting to get a quick, well-rounded intro. Here is a printed list of things to know if you preferrer to read about how fire works. To find out more about the Fire & Flow Arts, check out The Flow Art Institute for more info.

  • Stargaze.  typically, campsites have significantly less light pollution than urban areas.  This makes it more desirable for viewing the night sky.  Look for constellations, try to find the milky way, and wish on shooting stars.
  • Forage. Want to compose a meal out of wild produce? Start by grabbing a guide book, and joining a local foragers club IRL and/or virtually on Facebook.  Maybe you don’t want to go full gatherer right now, but it never hurts to hone those survival skills. Learn what plants are native to the area, can any be used as medicine?  Are there any that are poisonous that you should make sure to avoid?  Never a bad idea to educate yourself about your surroundings. Also, check your local and state rules before you set off on this adventure…for example, California has prohibited nearly all foraging on state-owned lands.
  • Release sky lanterns. I love floating sky lanterns.  They are magical mini flaming globes that float into the heavens and can be seen for quite a while after they have been released.  Originally started in China, there are now floating lantern festivals all over the world including Night Lights and Lights Over America which both take place across the US. But you don’t need a big festival to enjoy these, get your own and have fun wherever you are!  Personalize them by writing messages or drawing designs, then send them off.

  • Hide-n-Seek. Fun during the day and extra fun in the dark. At night this activity tends to turn into flashlight tag, but regardless, fun for kids and adults alike.
  • Orienteering. This is a group of sports that require navigational skills using a map and compass to navigate from point to point in diverse and usually unfamiliar terrain whilst moving at speed.  This is an organized event usually, as a race.  Check the linked websites for times/locations. While this is not typically associated with camping, it is an outdoor activity. The first time I ever did one of these events was at night with my Grandfather,  who was an ultra-marathoner, and I wasn’t even old enough to drive. We had a blast! Perfect for family bonding or anyone who wants to get a taste of what Amazing Race would be like.
  • Geocaching.   A real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Super fun for all ages and great to do on a whim. This is fun because these things are hidden in some really trippy spots. I did this a few times when I lived in San Francisco and I went to parts of the city I didn’t even know existed…and I lived there for almost a decade!  Really great way to get out and explore where you live, or wherever you find yourself, and who doesn’t love a real-life treasure hunt?!
  • Junior Ranger Programs. Almost all parks have Junior Ranger programs where your child and yourself can go through a series of special activities to highlight some of the fun duties performed by Park Rangers and to get a better look behind the scenes through a unique hands-on experience. My mom actually did this with my sister and me at a handful of national parks when we were on a West Coast road trip in 1995 and it was pretty awesome.  Sometimes we helped feed animals that were being rehabilitated, other times we participated in a Flag ceremony or got to do things like go on a special night hike.

DECORATIONS

Decor is a very personal choice, and camping in the elements provides a unique challenge all on it’s own. If you are looking for easy ways to quickly jazz up your camp site to make the experience that much more magical, I have you covered! Some ideas are practical, others are pleasing to the eye, all are FUN!

  • Festival Banners, Bunting, flags. No matter how you refer to these items, they are usually colorful, made of either cloth or waterproof plastic, and great ways to add pops of color to your outdoor space. Line the top of your tent canopy, decorate nearby trees or adorn them from your car/chair/tables.
  • Personalize your gear. Use some Spray Paint or decorate with cool colored duct tape!  Add reflective stickers for a bonus. Do anything you can to differentiate your items from others, its a great way to ensure your items don’t get accidentally mistaken as someone else’s and makes them easier to spot in general.
  • Tapestries and sheer curtainsThese large wall coverings can provide shade and are good to make “walls” for your camping site for some added privacy/art. They also add a whimsical element with the flowy movement in the breeze.
  • Rugs. Use an old one, make a new one. Also, try to use a woven beach “blanket” so that you can make the space feel a little cozier, have somewhere you can safely roam around without shoes on and still have your feet protected.  Nice to have a smaller rug just outside your shelter so you can take off your shoes and have somewhere to stand.
  • Lights. Blinky lights for personal adornment, clip-on hanging lightbulbs with 3 different light modes and/or Fairy lights to ad pops of color and give your site a whimsical touch. Whatever the choice may be, you are sure to never miss your tent in the dark again! *PRO TIP: Try to find solar charging options for your lights. It’s perfect as they can charge during the day and cut down on the need for batteries.

FOOD

Ah! That primal feeling of cooking over open flame! Something about a campfire that can really take cooking to new heights. Below you will find a few recommendations for recipes that are great to cook over a fire, some gadgets that make outdoor cooking easier, and smart ways to organize your food stuffs & cooler to ensure all your food is not waterlogged or bug infested.

  • Metal Skewers. Whether it’s hotdogs, S’mores, or any other thing you can think of, take your roasting game to new heights with these camping tools that put the FUN in functional.
  • Flavored Marshmallows. Speaking of S’mores, level up with these cool marshmallows from SMASHMALLOW!  Fun flavors that play well with chocolate and graham crackers as well as just a tasty treat to pop all on its own. My personal favorites are Mint Chocolate & Cinnamon Churro!
  • The Banana Boats. Want to mix up your dessert game?  Try a camping classic, a the Banana Boat!  Leave the peel on a banana, split id down the middle, add marshmallows, nuts, fruit, chocolate chips, cereal, granola, peanut butter, Nutella, caramel, etc., then wrap it up win foil and place it on the fire to cook down and get ooey-gooey. *PRO TIP: These are sometimes best to do the last night of camping also, so you can use whatever you have conveniently leftover.
  • Dutch Oven.  Go old school and bust out this timeless cookware to make sweet and savory camping yum yum in this time tested favorite. My personal favorite recipes to make in a Dutch Oven while camping are deep dish pizza and peach cobbler.
  • Cooler Racks. The best way to utilize your cooler space and elevate items out of the icy water by incorporating a stacking system. Use the shelves to make your cooler more functional for storage and protect your food items from being waterlogged. Compact enough to fit most standard coolers, and allows for easy access to floating ice-cold beverages below while keeping all other items dry.
  • Snacks. Food game is a challenge especially when you want to have things that do not have to be refrigerated but also won’t melt in the heat. Some of my personal favorite snacks to take on outdoor adventures are things I would not normally ever crave or eat normally. That being said, my first must-have snack is Perkey Jerky, Turkey Jerky in Teriyaki flavor. It is so tender for a cured meat. Full of flavor and not overwhelming on my jaw to chew, this brand of Jerky is some of the best I have come across…and I’ve been looking! Continuing on the salty side of life, I recommend dried seaweed sheets. Paper-thin sheets of crunchy seaweed that flakes ever so tastefully in your mouth. You will find yourself craving these long after they are gone, so make sure you stock up! *PRO TIP: Trader Joe’s always has a nice flavor selection of these. Next, Peanut M&M’s are always with me, even in the default world. Great way to make sure you will get your chocolate fix as they don’t melt, plus they are the perfect combination of salty, crunch, sweet! Moving on to, Baby carrots. A great little snack that can survive out of the cooler for a few days if they have to. Perfect mid-day pick me up and a great way to add some hearty crunch to any meal. And then, fruit cups. These are magical to leave bobbing around the bottom of your cooler with the beer and other beverages. Gets you some fruit, a nice little sugar treat, and when they are ice cold like that, there’s just something extra satisfying about them, swear! From there we go to, Werther’s Original Hard Candies. If you want something sweet that travels easily and lasts a little longer, got to have these. Perfect addition to any morning coffee for a little flavor boost as well. Flip back to salty, and I’m talking Sunchips, any flavor. That corny, crunchy flavor burst that hits your mouth with every bite, but doesn’t leave you feeling greasy. Plus, they take a little bit longer to go stale once exposed to the elements I have found. Lastly, one of my must-have camping yum yums is a timeless classic, Campbells Chicken Noodle Soup. Great In the event someone doesn’t feel well, also clutch if you want to warm up from the inside on a cold night or just enjoy a hassle-free meal that can easily be heated up over a fire or a portable stove.
